Assalamualaikum.
There’s a dua I heard often growing up, but I was too young to appreciate it back then. Every night before dinner, my Abu (dad) would recite an elaborate supplication—and by the time he finished, the food would have gone cold (or at least that’s how long it felt to an impatient kid).
He’d tell me constantly: “Son, when you’re my age, you’ll understand.” This was one of those things. Back then, I’d grow restless, my stomach growling—I just wanted to eat, you know? I’d glance around the table, wondering if anyone else felt the same, but everyone had their heads bowed, hands cupped, as my dad continued his dua.
Even now, after hearing it so many years, his voice still echoes in my mind: “rabbana hablana min azwajina wa dhuriyyatina qurrata A’yunin waj’alna lil-muttaqina imama.”
Part of why I couldn’t appreciate it then was that Arabic isn’t my mother tongue—I never truly grasped the meaning behind the words. But now, reflecting on my own journey of learning about Islam, I’ve grown to deeply love this specific dua.
English Meaning
“Our Lord! Grant unto us wives and offspring who will be the comfort of our eyes, and give us (the grace) to lead the righteous.”
The beauty of this dua lies in its plea for a united, righteous family unit—exactly what my father prayed for every night at our family dinners. It asks Allah for a spouse and children who bring “comfort,” and for us to be positive influences in the community by being “examples for the righteous.”
Who wouldn’t want such a family? These are core values we can shape our behaviors and character around.
