Assalamualaikum, in this article we’ll explore the best dua to recite when drinking milk.
As Muslims, it’s important to build the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes our way. We should give thanks continuously, for all blessings contribute to our growth and well-being.
This naturally leads to the question:
What’s the best dua to recite either before or after drinking milk?
The Guidance from the Prophet ﷺ
Narrated by Abdullah ibn Abbas:
I was in the house of Maymunah when the Messenger of Allah (pbuh), accompanied by Khalid ibn al-Walid, entered. Two roasted long-tailed lizards (dabb) placed on sticks were brought to him. The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) spat, and Khalid said: “I think you abominate it, O Messenger of Allah.” He replied: “Yes.” Then milk was brought to the Messenger of Allah (pbuh), and he drank it.
He then taught: “When one of you eats food, say: ‘O Allah, bless us in it and give us better nourishment than it.’ When you are given milk to drink, say: ‘O Allah, bless us in it and give us more of it—for no food or drink satisfies like milk.’”
Dua for Drinking Milk
Transliteration: allaahumma baarik lanaa feehi wa zidnaa minh
Translation: “O Allah, bless it for us and give us more of it.”
The Power of Gratitude
Gratitude helps us as Muslims refocus on what Allah has bestowed upon us, rather than fixating on what we lack. It’s nearly impossible to remain angry or bitter when we actively seek out blessings to be thankful for—even small ones.
Consider simple joys: having a microwave, for example. It’s truly amazing that we can warm food or drink to the perfect temperature with just a few buttons. Every blessing, big or small, is worth acknowledging with gratitude.
