The du’a recited by Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) is as follows:
رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ
Rabbanaa taqabbal minnaa innaka Antas Samee’ul Aleem
Translation: “Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing.” (Qur’an, Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 127)
Key Takeaways
-
Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) never missed an opportunity to praise Allah and seek His acceptance. Imagine, after building the Kaaba, he still prayed to Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) asking Him to accept the good deed he had just accomplished.
-
Keeping Allah at the forefront of your mind reflects your niyyah (intentions). It clearly indicates that whatever good you do, you do it for the sake of Allah.
This is an example of behavior that all Muslims should emulate.
The Qur’an states: “And [mention] when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House and [with him] Ishmael” (2:127)
Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and his son Ishmael (peace be upon them) achieved an extraordinary feat — building the Kaaba. After completing it, they remained mindful and reverent of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala), seeking His acceptance, hoping that the good deed they had done would be recognized by Him.
Thus, they called out in worship: “Rabbanaa taqabbal minnaa innaka Antas Samee’ul Aleem”, which means “Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing.”
The insight we can gain from this is: whenever we engage in a virtuous act, we should ask Allah to accept it. This not only demonstrates the purity of our niyyah but also serves as a reminder that all good deeds we perform are for the sake of Allah.
Allah is our final destination, and we must keep this truth at the forefront of our minds. All our words and actions should reflect this reality. If you develop the habit of consciously and deliberately remembering Allah in everything you do, it can protect you from making regrettable bad decisions.
Prophet Ibrahim’s Du’a for a Child
رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ
Rabbi hab lee minas saaliheen
Translation: “My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous.” (Qur’an, 37:100)
Prophet Ibrahim’s Du’a Recited in the Fire
حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ
hasbunal laahu wa ni’malwakeel
Translation: “Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs.” (Qur’an, 3:173)
Did you know that both Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) recited the exact same du’a when they needed Allah’s help the most?
This du’a is mentioned in Surah Ali ‘Imran, Ayah 173 of the Qur’an, in the context of the Battle of Uhud. The Qur’an does not state that Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) also recited this du’a. However, we learn this from Sahih Bukhari 4564:
Narrated Ibn Abbas: The last statement of Abraham when he was thrown into the fire was:–”Sufficient for us is Allah, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs for us.” (3:173)
