Rabbi hab lee minas saaliheen
“My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous.” – Qur’an, Surah Saffat, Ayah 100
Key Takeaways:
When facing adversity and obstacles, the only way forward is to proceed with hope and faith. Being trapped in fear, anxiety, and resentment will only harm you. You must demonstrate patience and perseverance when making your du’a (supplication) to Allah. Never be in a hurry for your du’a to be answered. Trust in Allah’s plan, for He knows what is best for you.
Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “One of you will have his supplication answered as long as he does not rush and say, ‘I supplicated, but my supplication was not answered.'” (Sahih, Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 3387)
Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) decided to emigrate from Egypt to a city called Ur with his wife Hajar and his nephew Prophet Lut (peace be upon him).
“And Lot believed him. [Abraham] said, ‘Indeed, I will emigrate to my Lord. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.'” (Qur’an 29:26)
During the journey, Prophet Lut (peace be upon him) eventually decided to go to Sodom and Gomorrah to guide the lost community there.
During this period, Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and Hajar were still childless and continued their journey through the desert.
Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) became increasingly worried that his lineage would end with him.
The Qur’an records the exact du’a made by Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him): “رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ” (Rabbi hab lee minas saaliheen), which means “My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous.” He continued to make this supplication, and eventually Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) bestowed their first son upon the couple. The subsequent verse states: “So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy.” (Qur’an 37:101)
To express their gratitude, they named their first son Ishmael, which means “God listens” or “God has heard.”
When we read the Prophetic du’as in the Qur’an, it may seem as though things happened immediately for them—as if they were favored, with a simple formula of asking and receiving.
This is not the case. We often overlook the context: Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) persisted in his supplication, and it was not until he reached old age that Allah answered his call.
