In Surah Baqarah Verse 185, Allah tells all Muslims:
“The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey – then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which he has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.”
One of the best ways to “glorify Allah for that which He has guided you” is to recite Takbeer, which is reciting “Allahu Akbar” (meaning “Allah is the greatest”).
However, on Eid day, there is a special Takbeerat called Takbeer E-Tashreeq, and the majority of scholars agree that it is part of the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to recite it.
Transliteration
Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, La ilaha illallah, Wallahu akbar, Allahu akbar wa lillahil hamd
Meaning of the Eid Takbeer
The translation of the Takbeer for Eid is:
“Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest, there is no god but Allah. And Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest and to Allah belongs all praise.”
Slightly Different Versions of Takbeer Tashreeq
There is a variation where “Allahu Akbar” is recited three times instead of two, and it also omits the conjunction “wa” (which means “and”). Both forms are generally acceptable and a matter of preference among different schools of Sunni Jurisprudence.
Variation: Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha ill-Allah, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, wa Lillahi’l-hamd
Specified Times to Recite Takbeer E-Tashreeq
Recite Takbeer E-Tashreeq after every Fardh Salat, commencing from the Fajr prayer of the 9th of Dhul Hijjah (the Day of Arafah) until after the Asr prayer on the 13th of Dhul Hijjah (the day after the final day of Eid).
This Takbeer is Sunnah according to the majority of scholars. It is Sunnah for both men and women, whether in the mosque, at home, or in the marketplace. Men should say it out loud, while women should say it quietly—because women are commanded to lower their voices. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If you notice something during the prayer, men should say ‘Subhan-Allaah!’ and women should clap.” Thus, women should recite the Takbeer quietly and men should recite it out loud.
Tradition of Reciting Takbeer on the Way to the Masjid for Eid Prayer
It was narrated from Urwah ibn al-Zubayr and Abu Salamah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmaan that they used to recite the Takbeer out loud when they came to the prayer ground in the morning. Naafi’ ibn Jubayr also used to recite the Takbeer out loud when he came to the prayer ground on the morning of Eid.
It was narrated from Ibn ‘Umar that he used to come to the prayer ground on the morning of Eid al-Fitr after the sun had risen. He would recite Takbeer until he reached the prayer ground, then continue reciting Takbeer there until the imam sat down and stopped reciting Takbeer.
A Longer Version of Takbeer E-Tashreeq
There is no single “correct” Takbeer for Eid, as the subject matter is broad. The Quran commands us to say Takbeer in general (i.e., to venerate Allah) without specifying one particular form of Takbeeraat. Ultimately, the preferred version will depend on your local masjid—likely the one that is easy for all adults and children to recite in congregation. Below is another common Takbeer recited during Eid:
Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar Allah is Great, Allah is Great
Allahu Akbar Allah is Great
La illaha il Allah There is no God but Allah
Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar Allah is Great, Allah is Great
Walilahil Hamd To Him belongs all Praise
Allahu akbar kabira Allah is the Greatest
Walhamdulillahi kathira And all Praise is due to Him
Wa subhan allahi And Glory to Allah
Bukratan wa asila Eventide and in the morning
La illaha il Allah There is no God but Allah the Unique
Sadaqa wa’dah He has fulfilled His Promise
Wa nasara abda And made Victorious His servant
Wa a’azza jundahu And made Mighty His soldiers
Wa hazamal-ahzaaba wahdah And defeated the confederates
La illaha il Allah There is no God but Allah
Wa laa na’budu illa iyyah He alone we worship
Mukhlessena lahud-deena With sincere and exclusive devotion
Walau karihal-Kafirun Even though the idolaters hate it
Allahumma salli ala Sayyidina Muhammad O Allah, have Mercy on our Prophet Muhammad
Wa ala aali Sayyidina Muhammad And on the family of our Prophet Muhammad
Wa ala as-haabie Sayyidina Muhammad And on the companions of our Prophet Muhammad
Wa ala ansari Sayyidina Muhammad And on the helpers of our Prophet Muhammad
Wa ala azwajie Sayyidina Muhammad And on the wives of our Prophet Muhammad
Wa ala dhurreyatie Sayyidina Muhammad And on the progeny of our Prophet Muhammad
Wa sallim tasleeman katheera And Bestow upon them much peace.
