Allah says in Surah Taubah Ayah 51: “Nothing shall ever happen to us except what Allah has ordained for us. He is our Maula (Lord, Helper and Protector). And in Allah let the believers put their trust.”
Surah Yunus Verse 49 states: “I possess not for myself any harm or benefit except what Allah should will. For every nation is a [specified] term. When their time has come, then they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede [it].”
It was narrated by Ibn ‘Abbas that when Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) was thrown into the fire, he said: “Allah (Alone) is sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs.” The Messenger of Allah Muhammad (ﷺ) said the same when he was told: “A great army of the pagans has gathered against you, so fear them.” This warning only increased his and the Muslims’ faith, and they said: “Allah (Alone) is sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us).”
The same verses can be interpreted differently depending on one’s perspective.
A pessimistic person might read these passages and think: “What’s the point in even trying? I won’t study for that test, won’t do the necessary preparation to succeed, won’t wake up early and give my best.”
This mindset is wrong.
Putting your faith in Allah means believing in and accepting His plan. You must do everything within your capacity; what happens next is predetermined by Allah.
We must accept both good and bad fortune with gratitude to Allah. We must learn to endure, embrace it, move forward, and become better because of it.
Hasbiyallahu La Ilaha Illa Hu Alayhi Tawakkaltu Dua in Arabic
The Arabic text of this dua is as follows:
حَسْبِيَ اللَّهُ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ وَهُوَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ
Transliteration
HasbiyAllahu laa ilaaha illa huwa alayhi tawakkaltu wa huwa Rabbul arshil adheem.
Meaning of the Dua
The meaning of “Hasbiyallahu la ilaha illa hu alayhi tawakkaltu…” is: “Allah is sufficient for me. There is none worthy of worship but Him. I have placed my trust in Him. He is the Lord of the Majestic Throne.”
Clarification on Recitation and Expectations
Some may hold the belief that reciting this dua seven times morning and evening will make Allah sufficient for them against all grief, or that whatever they desire will come true. This is incorrect.
The Quran states “Every prayer is answered,” but this does not mean “I will accept every one of your prayers.”
In Surah Baqarah Ayah 216, Allah, in His infinite wisdom, says: “But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Knows, while you know not.”
Another Dua for Trusting Allah: Hasbunallahu Wa Nimal Wakeel
Another dua affirming that Allah is sufficient for us is taken from Surah Taubah in the Quran: “Hasbunallahu Wa Nimal Wakeel” (Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs).
