It is Sunnah for both men and women, whether in the mosque, at home, or in the marketplace. Men should say it out loud, while women should say it quietly—because women are commanded to lower their voices. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If you notice something during the prayer, men should say ‘Subhan-Allaah!’ and women should clap.” Thus, women should recite the Takbeer quietly and men should recite it out loud.

Tradition of Reciting Takbeer on the Way to the Masjid for Eid Prayer

It was narrated from Urwah ibn al-Zubayr and Abu Salamah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmaan that they used to recite the Takbeer out loud when they came to the prayer ground in the morning. Naafi’ ibn Jubayr also used to recite the Takbeer out loud when he came to the prayer ground on the morning of Eid.

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Umar that he used to come to the prayer ground on the morning of Eid al-Fitr after the sun had risen. He would recite Takbeer until he reached the prayer ground, then continue reciting Takbeer there until the imam sat down and stopped reciting Takbeer.

A Longer Version of Takbeer E-Tashreeq

There is no single “correct” Takbeer for Eid, as the subject matter is broad. The Quran commands us to say Takbeer in general (i.e., to venerate Allah) without specifying one particular form of Takbeeraat. Ultimately, the preferred version will depend on your local masjid—likely the one that is easy for all adults and children to recite in congregation.
