{"id":17433,"date":"2025-12-20T05:56:33","date_gmt":"2025-12-20T13:56:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jislam.com\/?p=17433"},"modified":"2025-12-20T05:56:33","modified_gmt":"2025-12-20T13:56:33","slug":"what-is-ruqyah-and-how-to-perform-for-protection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jislam.com\/index.php\/2025\/12\/20\/what-is-ruqyah-and-how-to-perform-for-protection\/","title":{"rendered":"WHAT IS RUQYAH AND HOW TO PERFORM FOR PROTECTION"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-page-id=\"JRY8fJxwYdDFFlcPGghc5trwnic\" data-lark-html-role=\"root\" data-docx-has-block-data=\"false\">\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-Ijlnff1XIdIIqtcLpFRcEwp9nzf\">Many Muslims have questions about Ruqyah: What exactly is it, and do you need specific credentials or skills to perform it?<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-H4odfd6GvdTsZzcgAQscuqZtnvh\">Let\u2019s start by clarifying what Ruqyah is.<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-QkGpfNTZ5d5T9UcMWLlcOzMSnDe\">Ruqyah holds the same status as a dua\u2014it is simply the recitation of specific Quranic verses or authentic hadith that are used to seek refuge in Allah.<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-IircfYOnydDxJocBfz0cKwIsnsg\">More specifically, these verses are believed to be a source of healing: for illnesses and ailments, protection from the evil eye, exorcism of jinn, and relief from sihr (black magic or witchcraft).<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-Iekgf97kVdYeKVcgzN4cq6nGnDf\">You do not need specialized skills to perform Ruqyah.<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-O210fwvLKdsnsbcZPhxcVYCsnbd\">In fact, the best and most perfect way is to recite Ruqyah yourself. While asking others to perform it is permissible, some acts are better done personally. Performing Ruqyah is not complicated; you can begin by reciting Surah Fatiha or the Al-Mu\u2019awwidhaat (Surah Falaq and Surah Nas).<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-WKn7fIqicdzWvXcB7WIc1wwHnsd\">These are regarded as verses of refuge, and it was the Sunnah of the Prophet (\ufdfa) to recite them when he was ill.<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"heading-3 ace-line old-record-id-SUM4fnMaGdOw4Ncm9l0cZrdAnwg\">What is Sihr (Black Magic), and Is It Real?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-Ls77fXgx0dzVD2cETyycIVUZnkg\">Sihr is indeed real and refers to black magic or witchcraft. In Islam, it can be learned by those with specific knowledge, and practicing it is a serious sin. There are many Quranic passages that attest to its danger.<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-LrXVfDW5RdqfIvcmpo9chQgznNf\">In Surah Baqarah Ayat 102, Allah says:<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-Sa8IfWF01dsaSdcmwC8c7QeUnEA\">\u201cAnd they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, \u2018We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic].\u2019 And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah. And the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-NAmNfo2w6dsQxpcFxTJcYa3Ingf\">And in Surah Yunus Ayat 81:<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-NVI6fYunmdamgTcJtnncm4HOnvd\">\u201cAnd when they had thrown, Moses said, \u2018What you have brought is [only] magic. Indeed, Allah will expose its worthlessness. Indeed, Allah does not amend the work of corrupters.\u2019\u201d<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"heading-3 ace-line old-record-id-Cq0zfwW8Kd5dTXchy7ScVsLznAb\">How to Perform Ruqyah<\/h3>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-Gxw0fazbed0Ne5cr4SmcO5gxn8d\">The basic process is to supplicate into your palms, just as you would when making a dua. Then blow into your hands and wipe the area causing pain or discomfort.<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-ZssYfu4xmdt99hcP2nxcLHwGn8b\">When the Prophet Muhammad (\ufdfa) was seriously ill, Aisha (RA) would perform this for him, as narrated:<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-GIRFfmFKAd8q1mcTEE7cg8y3nVK\">\u201cWhenever Allah\u2019s Messenger (\ufdfa) became sick, he would recite Mu\u2019awwidhat (Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas) and then blow his breath over his body. When he became seriously ill, I used to recite (these two Suras) and rub his hands over his body hoping for its blessings.\u201d<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"heading-3 ace-line old-record-id-IdrFfR87wdHgXdcbrITcTOKXnEg\">Quranic Verses for Ruqyah<\/h3>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-FwWHfpLVbd9RA2cTdFWcgMpdnlb\">Here is a list of Quranic verses that can be recited for Ruqyah:<\/div>\n<ul class=\"list-bullet1\">\n<li class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-T9sqfWQxadY7l5cSiydcyHLjnme\" data-list=\"bullet\">\n<div>Surah Fatiha<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-ITNWfcCM2dH6Q4cx6WXcZ1nFnSb\" data-list=\"bullet\">\n<div>Surah Falaq<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-DkUafflDod33ejcrnmac04jfnag\" data-list=\"bullet\">\n<div>Surah An-Nas<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-IXNKf5g2VdeXwicrRWycCTjInuI\" data-list=\"bullet\">\n<div>Surah Ikhlas<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-TcwCfvUn5drrsrcKLTDcVwAvnFd\" data-list=\"bullet\">\n<div>Ayatul Kursi (Surah Baqarah Ayat 255)<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-KcfefRK3DdJd8ScXkhbcfceenuJ\" data-list=\"bullet\">\n<div>Surah Al A\u2019raf Ayat 106-122<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-S6SPfFGFDdfAyGc50GmcbLyjnNe\" data-list=\"bullet\">\n<div>Surah Taha Ayat 65-69<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-S7eJfeyB6dBJUZcZ3n6c83jrnHc\" data-list=\"bullet\">\n<div>Surah Al-Kafirun<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"heading-3 ace-line old-record-id-DlPQfF9wQdjGCEc4LNnckpamnYf\">Supplications for Ruqyah from Hadith<\/h3>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-Sb8Ifi22TdWjABcxyOlcWiyenec\">Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her) reported:<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-ZAkqfDY7Ad87ENcfIZycqpTKn0c\">\u201cWhen the Prophet (\ufdfa) visited any ailing member of his family, he would touch the sick person with his right hand and supplicate: \u2018Allahumma Rabban-nasi, adhhibil-ba\u2019sa, washfi, Antash-Shafi, la shifa\u2019a illa shifa\u2019uka, shifaan la yughadiru saqaman [O Allah! the Rubb of mankind! Remove this disease and cure (him or her)! You are the Great Curer. There is no cure but through You, which leaves behind no disease].\u2019\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-WS0efsxSsdCGdCc1fXtc8OgenYK\">In Arabic, this dua is written:<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-ZQSIfNRrrdbsHscFMMXckMbRnLf\">\u0627\u0644\u0644\u064e\u0651\u0647\u064f\u0645\u064e\u0651 \u0631\u064e\u0628\u064e\u0651 \u0627\u0644\u0646\u064e\u0651\u0627\u0633\u0650 \u0645\u064f\u0630\u0652\u0647\u0650\u0628\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0628\u064e\u0627\u0633\u0650 \u0627\u0634\u0652\u0641\u0650 \u0623\u064e\u0646\u0652\u062a\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0634\u064e\u0651\u0627\u0641\u0650\u064a \u0644\u064e\u0627 \u0634\u064e\u0627\u0641\u0650\u064a\u064e \u0625\u0650\u0644\u064e\u0651\u0627 \u0623\u064e\u0646\u0652\u062a\u064e \u0634\u0650\u0641\u064e\u0627\u0621\u064b \u0644\u064e\u0627 \u064a\u064f\u063a\u064e\u0627\u062f\u0650\u0631\u064f \u0633\u064e\u0642\u064e\u0645\u064b\u0627<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-LiilfYLJjdjsg6cUydycSBe2ned\">We also learn from authentic hadith the dua Prophet Ibrahim (AS) would recite to seek protection from the evil eye. Ibn Abbas narrated:<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-V4nRfhYA0dy8v3cj7MycJ0AunMe\">\u201cThe Prophet (\ufdfa) used to seek Refuge with Allah for Al-Hasan and Al-Husain and say: \u2018Your forefather (i.e., Abraham) used to seek Refuge with Allah for Ishmael and Isaac by reciting the following: Audhu bi kalimatillahi al-tammati min kulli shaytaanin wa hammatin wa min kulli `aynin lammah [O Allah! I seek Refuge with Your Perfect Words from every devil and from poisonous pests and from every evil, harmful, envious eye].\u2019\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-KQ0BftKjudPX7Nc5lz9cvfjXn2f\">In Arabic:<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-ZsUYfAoQAd3UtJcj5s4cUkIlnrc\">\u0623\u064e\u0639\u064f\u0648\u0630\u064f \u0628\u0650\u0643\u064e\u0644\u0650\u0645\u064e\u0627\u062a\u0650 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u064e\u0651\u0647\u0650 \u0627\u0644\u062a\u064e\u0651\u0627\u0645\u064e\u0651\u0629\u0650 \u0645\u0650\u0646\u0652 \u0643\u064f\u0644\u0650\u0651 \u0634\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0637\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064d \u0648\u064e\u0647\u064e\u0627\u0645\u064e\u0651\u0629\u064d\u060c \u0648\u064e\u0645\u0650\u0646\u0652 \u0643\u064f\u0644\u0650\u0651 \u0639\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0646\u064d \u0644\u0627\u064e\u0645\u064e\u0651\u0629\u064d<\/div>\n<h4 class=\"heading-4 ace-line old-record-id-IGkpfJUjodGc3Dc0aA9cZDednNW\">Ruqyah Dua from Jibril<\/h4>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-PQ6ZfcWxydNd1AcwWsLcVVA8n63\">Abu Sa\u2019id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-WOIufMl3id2Y9WcvlUpc1OvGnCb\">\u201cJibril (Gabriel) came to the Prophet (\ufdfa) and said: \u2018O Muhammad (\ufdfa)! Do you feel sick?\u2019 He (\ufdfa) said, \u2018Yes.\u2019 Jibril supplicated thus (i.e., he performed Ruqyah): \u2018Bismillahi arqika, min kulli shay\u2019in yu\u2019dhika, min sharri kulli nafsin aw \u2018ayni hasidi, Allahu yashfika, bismillahi arqika. [With the Name of Allah. I recite over you (to cleanse you) from all that troubles you, and from every harmful mischief and from the evil of the eyes of an envier. Allah will cure you; and with the Name of Allah, I recite over you].\u2019\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-MXjKfdUxadNmzkc2rQCcn1Henng\">The fourth supplication, recommended for pain relief, is narrated by Uthman bin Abi Al-\u2018As:<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-Ssjnfy6todHrObclALGcyoornmb\">\u201cThe Messenger of Allah (\ufdfa) came to me while I had a pain that almost ruined me. So the Messenger of Allah (\ufdfa) said: \u2018Rub it with your right hand seven times and say A\u2019udhu billahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhiru [I seek refuge with Allah and with His Power from the evil that I find and that I fear].\u2019 He said: \u2018So I did it, and Allah removed what I had, and I never ceased telling my family and others to do it.\u2019\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-LTgbfzMFUdVY0Xc4ivCcNi27n9T\">In Arabic (begin with \u201cBismillah\u201d three times):<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-HdGjflOTCdyttXcggXRcVjLCnWe\">\u0628\u0650\u0627\u0633\u0652\u0645\u0650 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u064e\u0651\u0647\u0650 x3<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-DLwqftiHVdHiKfcOH9rc5cYWnoe\">\u0623\u064e\u0639\u064f\u0648\u0630\u064f \u0628\u0650\u0627\u0644\u0644\u064e\u0651\u0647\u0650 \u0648\u064e\u0642\u064f\u062f\u0652\u0631\u064e\u062a\u0650\u0647\u0650 \u0645\u0650\u0646\u0652 \u0634\u064e\u0631\u0650\u0651 \u0645\u064e\u0627 \u0623\u064e\u062c\u0650\u062f\u064f \u0648\u064e\u0623\u064f\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0630\u0650\u0631\u064f<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"heading-3 ace-line old-record-id-Ctf6ftTczdH2IncHpyUcw66Inlh\">Virtues and Benefits of Reciting Ruqyah<\/h3>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-A3vPfpPQAdmootcVpnNc57mqn6d\">Authentic hadith highlight the importance of Ruqyah and guidance on when and how to recite it:<\/div>\n<ul class=\"list-bullet1\">\n<li class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-GKiKfnB3adeiQ2crtYaciTtZn0g\" data-list=\"bullet\">\n<div>Aishah (RA) narrated that the Prophet (\ufdfa) used to blow when performing Ruqyah.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-HCDLfwp1AdHTtYcWbopcK0R7nYc\" data-list=\"bullet\">\n<div>Aishah (RA) also narrated that the Prophet (\ufdfa) commanded her to recite Ruqyah to treat the evil eye.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-UuFCfqDdYdHuHcc4bSdc3DY0n6e\" data-list=\"bullet\">\n<div>Jibril (AS) recited Ruqyah for the Prophet (\ufdfa) to alleviate his suffering, seeking protection from the evil of every person and the evil eye.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"heading-3 ace-line old-record-id-Omm5f6kRMdqFNicEwuvcBHPdnbh\">The Use of Zam-Zam Water<\/h3>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-Weaif2Tu0dQpFKcPcQVc85wVncc\">Authentic hadith provides insight into the use of Zam-Zam water. Jabir bin Abdullah narrated:<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-Cp57fwvpldDvGucTrYbczAsGneh\">\u201cI heard the Messenger of Allah (\ufdfa) say: \u2018The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for.\u2019\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-NI2Bf6cDtdmUPWccoztckvOgnPe\">This implies that Zam-Zam water serves the intention with which it is drunk. If you drink it to feel better, Allah will aid you; if to be nourished, Allah will feed you; if to quench thirst, Allah will satisfy you.<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"heading-3 ace-line old-record-id-EdRofm0A2dUeIkc51gGcVdaBn4d\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n<div class=\"ace-line ace-line old-record-id-HpNqfuC3cdkMNccfH9cc8t5tnhd\">Inshallah, through the recitation of these Quranic verses and authentic supplications, Allah will hear our call for help and aid us in ways beyond our understanding. We should invoke Allah and remember Him in all our deeds, seeking His healing, protection for our homes and families, and to be among the best of believers. Keep your iman (faith) strong, ignore the whispers of the Shayateen, and understand that some things take longer than we wish.
