In this article, we will explore short, authentic duas that are easy to remember—duas rooted in the hadith and sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Our goal is to help you make these supplications a regular part of your daily life.

By the end of this article, you will know which dua to recite when entering and leaving your home, as well as good practices recommended by Prophet Muhammad to protect your home from the evils of shaitan.

Dua When Entering Home

A beloved sunnah teaches that when a person enters their home and mentions Allah’s name upon entering and while eating, Satan is deprived of a place to linger and share the meal. Conversely, if one enters or eats without invoking Allah’s name, Satan finds opportunity to be present.

Another cherished guidance from the Prophet (pbuh) is for believers to greet their family with salam upon entering the home. He said to Anas (ra): “O my little son! When you enter upon your family, give the salam—it will be a blessing for you and the inhabitants of your house.”

Dua When Leaving Home

Transliteration: bismillaah, tawakkaltu ‛alal-laah, wa laa ḥawla wa laa quwwata illaa billaah

The Prophet (pbuh) taught that when a believer goes out of their home and recites this dua, they are immediately guided, defended, and protected. The devils retreat from them, with one devil asking another: “How can we approach someone who has been guided, defended, and protected?” This dhikr is a simple yet powerful practice to incorporate into daily life.

Other Duas and Practices to Protect Your Home

Gratitude to Allah is foundational—we must cherish the blessing of having a home and shelter, recognizing that circumstances could be far more difficult. As Allah says in Surah Ibrahim: “And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.’”

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) also emphasized kindness to neighbors, generous hospitality to guests, and speaking only what is good (or remaining silent if you have nothing beneficial to say). He said: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not hurt his neighbor, should serve his guest generously, and should speak what is good or keep silent.”

Another blessed sunnah is reciting Surah Al-Baqarah in your home. The Prophet (pbuh) said: “Do not make your houses as graveyards. Satan runs away from the house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited.” While reciting it aloud is ideal, technology allows us to play it in the background during daily tasks like cleaning or cooking, bringing barakah to the space.

Related Useful Duas

Dua to Find Lost Items

Hadith and Dua for Newlyweds

Dua Before Sleeping at Night

Dua for Entering and Leaving Masjid

Conclusion

Protecting your home through dua and sunnah is a beautiful way to connect with Allah and seek His blessings. The duas for entering and leaving home are short, easy to remember, and deeply impactful—we encourage you to revisit this guide until they become second nature.

Consider teaching these duas to your family members: sharing this knowledge not only brings barakah but also helps reinforce the supplications in your own memory.

If you enjoyed this article and learned something valuable, consider signing up for our newsletter.
