This is a very valid question. The dua shared here is referenced in the hadith collection Jami’ At Tirmidhi (Hadith #3446). Originally, this supplication was recited before mounting an animal to begin a journey\u2014today, it translates perfectly to seeking Allah’s (\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0670\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f\u06e5 \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0670\u0644\u064e\u0649\u0670) protection while traveling by car, just as Prophet Muhammad (\ufdfa) did for his journeys.<\/div>\n

The Full Supplication from the Hadith<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n
Ali bin Rabi\u2019ah reported: \u201cI witnessed Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) having an animal brought to him to ride. When he placed his foot in the stirrup, he said: \u2018In the Name of Allah\u2019 (Bismill\u0101h) three times. Once he had ascended upon its back, he said: \u2018All praise is due to Allah\u2019 (Al\u1e25amdulillah), then he recited the above dua. After that, he said: \u2018All praise is due to Allah\u2019 (Al\u1e25amdulillah) three times, \u2018Allah is the Greatest\u2019 (Allahu Akbar) three times, and \u2018Glory is to You, indeed I have wronged myself, so forgive me\u2014for indeed none forgives sins except You\u2019 (Sub\u1e25anaka inni qad \u1e93alamtu nafsi faghfirli fa-innahu la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa ant). Then he laughed.<\/div>\n
I asked: \u2018O Commander of the Believers! What caused you to laugh?\u2019 He replied: \u2018I saw the Messenger of Allah (\ufdfa) do exactly as I did, then he laughed. I asked him: \u201cWhat caused you to laugh, O Messenger of Allah?\u201d He said: \u201cIndeed, your Lord is very pleased with His worshipper when he says: \u2018O my Lord, forgive me my sins\u2014indeed, no one other than You forgives sins.\u2019\u201d\u2019\u201d<\/div>\n

Why Recite This Dua Before Driving?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n
We should all strive to remember Allah (\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0670\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f\u06e5 \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0670\u0644\u064e\u0649\u0670) before driving\u2014by His grace, He will protect us. Abu Huraira reported the Prophet (pbuh) as saying that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, stated: \u201cI am near to the thought of my servant as he thinks about me, and I am with him as he remembers me. If he remembers me in his heart, I also remember him in my heart; if he remembers me in assembly, I remember him in assembly better than his remembrance. If he draws near me by the span of a palm, I draw near him by a cubit; if he draws near me by a cubit, I draw near him by the space of two hands. And if he walks towards me, I rush towards him.\u201d<\/div>\n
As the Quran reminds us: \u201cNothing shall ever happen to us except what Allah has ordained for us. He is our Mawla (protector).\u201d (Surah Taubah 9:51)<\/div>\n
