(The Most Sacred \/ The Most Holy)<\/p>\n

al-Quddus Meaning:<\/h2>\n

The one who is clear of any imperfection, weakness, or shortcoming.<\/p>\n

Allah \u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0670\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f\u06e5 \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0670\u0644\u064e\u0649\u0670 is Al-Quddus (in Arabic: \u0671\u0644\u0652\u0642\u064f\u062f\u064f\u0651\u0648\u0633\u064f), meaning the most pure or the most holy. He is so far removed from any imperfection and does not suffer from any shortcomings. The mere mention of being free from defects borders on insult as it implies the possibility of imperfection. He transcends all that we perceive as perfection, and all sublime attributes belong to Him.<\/p>\n

Arabic Root:<\/strong>
\nFrom the root qaf-dal-sin (\u0642 \u062f \u0633), which has the following classical Arabic connotations: to be pure, clean, spotless be far removed from impurity or imperfection to be holy, sacred, and hallowed.<\/p>\n

The name Al-Quddus is derived from the word quds<\/em> meaning sanctify, purify, or to be holy. Al-Quddus is the superlative which captures His essence of perfection. He is far removed from resembling anything. Imam al-Ghazali writes in his treatise of the 99 names, “the Holy is the one who transcends every one of the attributes of perfection which the majority of creatures thinks of as perfection.”<\/p>\n

The Holy Spirit:<\/strong>
\nThe Qur’an mentions the concept of the Holy Spirit (Ruh Al-Quddus) four times. It is understood that He purifies and makes holy through this spirit. This is the concept of the divine force and influence Allah \u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0670\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f\u06e5 \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0670\u0644\u064e\u0649\u0670 has over His creatures. Whenever you see either Ruh al-Quddus or Ruh al-Amin (the faithful or trustworthy spirit, see 26:193 for example) the commentators of the Qur’an interpret it as being interchangeable with the Angel Jibrel.<\/p>\n

In the tafsir of Ibn Kathir for Surah Maidah ayah 110, “O Isa, son of Maryam! Remember My favor to you and to your mother when I supported you with Ruh il-Qudus (Jibril) so that you spoke to the people in the cradle and in maturity […] and you healed those born blind, and the lepers by My permission, and when you brought forth the dead by My permission;”<\/p>\n

When Allah \u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0670\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f\u06e5 \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0670\u0644\u064e\u0649\u0670 mentions the passing of this spirit it’s understood as to cast a reflection of His divine characteristics on His creation. It makes a thing pure, and wholesome and removes any imperfections. Isa (as) was gifted with this quality making him infallible and enabled him to perform these miracles.<\/p>\n

\n“Those messengers \u2013 some of them We caused to exceed others. Among them were those to whom Allah spoke, and He raised some of them in degree. And We gave Jesus, the Son of Mary, clear proofs, and We supported him with the Pure Spirit. If Allah had willed, those [generations] succeeding them would not have fought each other after the clear proofs had come to them. But they differed, and some of them believed and some of them disbelieved. \n[The Day] when Allah will say, \u201cO Jesus, Son of Mary, remember My favor upon you and upon your mother when I supported you with the Pure Spirit and you spoke to the people in the cradle and in maturity; and [remember] when I taught you writing and wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel; and when you designed from clay [what was] like the form of a bird with My permission, then you breathed into it, and it became a bird with My permission; and you healed the blind and the leper with My permission; and when you brought forth the dead with My permission; and when I restrained the Children of Israel from [killing] you when you came to them with clear proofs and those who disbelieved among them said, ‘This is not but obvious magic.'” \u2014 (Qur’an 5:110)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

English Translation:<\/span>
\n“Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth is exalting Allah, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.” \u2014 (Qur’an 62:1<\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n

From the hadith, A’isha reported that the Messenger of Allah (\ufdfa) “used to pronounce while bowing and prostrating himself: (subbuhun quddus rabb al-mala’ikati wal-ruh) All Glorious (\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0651\u064f\u0648\u062d\u064c), All Holy (\u0642\u064f\u062f\u0651\u064f\u0648\u0633\u064c), Lord of the Angels (\u0631\u064e\u0628\u0651\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0645\u064e\u0644\u0627\u064e\u0626\u0650\u0643\u064e\u0629\u0650) and the Spirit (\u0648\u064e\u0627\u0644\u0631\u0651\u064f\u0648\u062d\u0650).” [1]<\/a><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n

Narrated Ubayy ibn Ka’b: When the Messenger of Allah (\ufdfa) offered salutation in the witr prayer, he said: Glorify (\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e) be to the king (\u0627\u0644\u0652\u0645\u064e\u0644\u0650\u0643\u0650) most holy (\u0627\u0644\u0652\u0642\u064f\u062f\u0651\u064f\u0648\u0633\u0650). It was narrated from Ubayy bin Ka’b that: The Messenger of Allah (\ufdfa) used to pray witr with three rak’ahs. In the first he would recite: “Glorify the Name of Your Lord, the Most High” in the second: “Say: O you disbelievers!”, and in the third: “Say: He is Allah, (the) One”. And he would say the Qunut before bowing, and when he finished he would say: Subhanal-Malikil-Quddus (Glory be to the Sovereign, the Most Holy) three times, elongating the words the last time. As we’ll explore in later sections, the name Al-Afuww, the effacer of sins – He pardons any sin and leaves no trace of any fault.
