The name Kosovo (Albanian: Kosovo \u00eb, Serbian: \u041a\u043e\u0441\u043e\u0432\u043e) comes from the Serbian word for “land of the black bird”. Located on the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe, it is an autonomous province of Serbia, bordered by North Macedonia to the south, Albania to the southwest, and Montenegro to the northwest. The largest city is the capital city of Pristina. More than 90% of the population are Albanians, distributed in most parts of Kosovo, while other minority groups are mainly Serbs and Montenegrins. [1]
After the end of the Kosovo War in June 1999, Kosovo was placed under the trusteeship of the United Nations. On February 17, 2008, Kosovo unilaterally declared “independence”, which was recognized by the United States and some of its allies. However, Serbia has always insisted on its sovereignty over Kosovo, while about 90 countries including China, Russia, India, Greece, Romania, Slovakia, and Spain do not recognize Kosovo’s “independence”. On July 22, 2010, the International Court of Justice issued an advisory opinion on the Kosovo case, stating that Kosovo’s declaration of “independence” on February 17, 2008 “does not violate international law”. On August 5, 2016, Kosovo participated in the Olympic Games for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
