The Republic of Iraq (Arabic: الجمهورンال동اقンة, Kurdish: كۆماری동ێراق); The Republic of Iraq, abbreviated as “Iraq”, is located in southwestern Asia, northeast of the Arabian Peninsula. It borders Türkiye to the north, Iran to the east, Syria and Jordan to the west, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait to the south, and the Persian Gulf to the southeast. The Euphrates River and the Tigris River flow through the entire region from northwest to southeast. The coastline is 60 kilometers long. In the middle of 3000 BC, the earliest inhabitants of the Mesopotamian region, the Sumerians, created cuneiform script, 60 decimal notation, and circular division. Afterwards, Iraq experienced the rule of the Babylonian Kingdom, Assyrian Empire, Neo Babylonian Kingdom, Persia, Seleucid (known as Tiaozhi in Chinese history), Parthian, and Persian Sassanid dynasties. The Abbasid dynasty established its capital in Baghdad. In 1920, it became a British Mandate of Mesopotamia. In 1921, the British sent Faisal I from the Mecca Hashemite royal family to Baghdad to establish the Kingdom of Iraq. The Republic of Iraq was declared in 1958. [1]

On November 20, 2024 local time, Iraq held its first national census in 27 years. On November 25, 2024 local time, Iraqi Prime Minister Sudani released the preliminary results of the national census. According to statistics, the total population of Iraq is 45407895, of which 70.3% are urban and 29.7% are rural. In terms of age composition, the population under the age of 15 in Iraq accounts for 36.1%, the working age population aged 15 to 64 accounts for 60.2%, and the population aged 65 and above accounts for 3.7%. Sudani pointed out that the proportion of working age population in Iraq has reached 60%, with an annual population growth rate of 2.3%, and has entered a “demographic dividend period”. Among them, the Arab ethnic group accounts for about 78% (Shia accounts for about 60%, Sunni accounts for about 18%), the Kurdish ethnic group accounts for about 15%, and the rest are Turkmen, Armenian, etc. [1]
On February 24, 2025 local time, Baghdad reported that the latest national census results released by the Iraqi Ministry of Planning showed that the total population of Iraq had reached 46.118 million.
